Managing a team in a relegation battle is one of the toughest tasks in the Premier League. With only a few games left, pressure is high, and every point counts.
Success starts with mindset. Players must believe in the manager’s methods and trust that the chosen way gives the best chance to stay up. Organising, motivating, and aligning the team is crucial, especially under pressure. Strong leadership shines in these moments when players need support the most.
I am proud that none of my teams were relegated during my managerial career. I always made expectations clear, on and off the pitch. Every match was analysed, every point counted, and honesty and hard work were mandatory in the dressing room.
Even in challenging moments, my teams played forward to supply our most talented players. Everyone worked tirelessly both on and off the ball, pressing opponents or dropping back as needed. Our forwards led by example, contributing to the team’s spirit and results.
Using Home Advantage
Home form is vital for survival. Clubs must make their stadium a fortress where visiting teams feel unwelcome. Early in my Premier League career, Sir Alex Ferguson emphasised that home points were critical for survival. If top teams left praising your stadium, you weren’t doing it right.
We turned the Britannia Stadium into a place where every match felt like a battle. The fans’ energy lifted the team, especially when we went down to 10 men but still beat a strong Manchester City side 1-0. That win sparked a run of four wins and two draws at home, which ultimately secured our safety.
A supportive crowd can be the difference between relegation and survival. Without it, even the best tactics may falter, and home advantage can turn into a burden.
