MICHEAL CARRICK says Manchester United must learn important lessons after their 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Carrick admitted the result hurt his team. He said the performance did not meet expectations. However, he believes the squad can respond in a positive way.

The United manager is not known for blaming players publicly. Unlike former coach Ruben Amorim, Carrick avoids harsh criticism after defeats. Instead, he prefers to focus on improvement.

Carrick knows the next 11 days could shape United’s season. His team will face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 15 March. A win could strengthen their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

If United beat Villa, Carrick will prove two things. He will keep the club in a strong position for a top-four finish. He will also show that he can respond well after a setback.

Carrick’s former manager Alex Ferguson often said that every team loses at some point. What matters most is how the team reacts.

Before the defeat, Carrick had an impressive start as manager. United won six games and drew one in his first seven matches. Those results helped build confidence in the squad.

However, recent performances have not been as strong. United struggled to impress against West Ham United and Everton. They also needed a penalty from Matheus Cunha to turn the game against Crystal Palace.

Some players have also seen a drop in form. Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha have not scored regularly. Kobbie Mainoo has also struggled to maintain his earlier performance level.

Injuries have created more problems for Carrick. Several key players were missing against Newcastle. Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu were all unavailable.

Other players such as Casemiro and Luke Shaw were also feeling the effects of a busy schedule.

Despite these problems, the defeat was still frustrating for United. Newcastle scored through William Osula, who beat Tyrell Malacia before finding the net.

The result means United have now lost twice this season against teams reduced to 10 men.

Even so, the bigger picture remains positive. United still sit third in the league. They also have fewer distractions than their rivals because they are not playing in European or domestic cup competitions.

Carrick believes his team must stay focused.

He said the players need to understand what went wrong and improve in the next match. At the same time, he wants them to remain confident because the season still offers exciting possibilities.
