Norway once again proved its dominance at the Winter Olympics. At the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games, the country finished with 18 gold medals and 41 total medals. That performance set a new Olympic record.

Tore Øvrebø, Norway’s director of elite sport, admitted he nearly lost his voice from cheering. During the Games, Norway kept adding gold medals, especially in Nordic combined. The momentum never slowed.

From the 2018 PyeongChang Games to Milan-Cortina 2026, Norway has consistently topped the medal table. No other nation has matched its success in winter sports during this period.

What makes this achievement remarkable is Norway’s size. The country has about 5.5 million people. That is close to the population of South Carolina. Yet Norway keeps outperforming global powers like United States, China, Germany, Italy and Canada.

Norway’s winter success may not surprise many. It is a Nordic country with deep skiing traditions. However, its sporting excellence goes beyond snow and ice.

In recent years, Norway has produced champions in summer sports as well. The country won Olympic gold in beach volleyball and achieved major success in track and field. Its triathlon program ranks among the best in the world.

Norway also shines in global sports. Viktor Hovland competes among the top golfers worldwide. Casper Ruud reached world No. 2 in the ATP rankings. Erling Haaland has become one of football’s most feared strikers. Ada Hegerberg won the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

So what drives this success?

Experts point to one core principle: enjoyment. Norway builds its sports system around fun and participation at the grassroots level. Children play multiple sports. Coaches focus on development, not early pressure. The system encourages long-term growth instead of short-term wins.

This balanced approach produces confident athletes. It also reduces burnout. Other nations, including the United States, could study this model closely.

Norway proves that population size does not define sporting power. Smart planning, strong culture, and a focus on joy can create champions in every season.
