Migrant Boat Sinks, 250 Missing in Indian Ocean

Around 250 people remain missing after a migrant boat sank in the Andaman Sea, according to the United Nations. The vessel carried Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, including children.

The boat had left Bangladesh and was heading toward Malaysia. Officials said rough weather and overcrowding likely caused the disaster. Strong winds and high waves hit the vessel before it went down.

Authorities have not confirmed the exact time of the sinking. However, the incident took place last week during dangerous sea conditions.

Rescue Efforts Save Only a Few Survivors

The Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued nine people on 9 April. Survivors described extreme conditions at sea after the boat capsized.

One survivor, Rafiqul Islam, said he floated for nearly 36 hours before rescuers found him. He also suffered burns after oil leaked from the vessel.

Rescue teams have not located the remaining passengers. As a result, fears are growing that many may have died.

Rohingya Crisis Drives Dangerous Journeys

The Rohingya migrant boat tragedy highlights the ongoing refugee crisis. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled Myanmar after a military crackdown in 2017.

Most now live in crowded camps in Bangladesh. Poor living conditions and limited opportunities push many to risk dangerous journeys by sea.

Many refugees aim to reach Malaysia, where they hope to find work and safety. However, these trips often involve overcrowded and unsafe boats.

UN Warns of Growing Humanitarian Crisis

UN agencies said the migrant boat sinking shows the urgent need for long-term solutions. They warned that ongoing violence in Myanmar continues to block safe returns.

They also noted that reduced aid and harsh conditions in refugee camps force people to take extreme risks.

Boats used in these journeys often lack basic supplies like clean water and sanitation. Many do not reach their destination, and some migrants face detention or deportation.

Calls for Global Action Increase

The United Nations has urged the international community to increase support for Rohingya refugees. Officials say more funding is needed to improve conditions in camps.

They also stressed the need to address the root causes of displacement in Myanmar. Without lasting solutions, experts warn that more tragedies like this migrant boat sinking could occur.
