Flights, hotel rooms, restaurant meals, taxis, entrance tickets and small daily purchases can turn what looked like an affordable holiday into a substantial expense.

But geography changes everything.

There are still cheap countries for tourists where comfortable accommodation, good local meals, public transport and memorable experiences can cost far less than travelers might expect.

And “cheap” does not necessarily mean sacrificing the experience.

Some affordable destinations offer ancient cities, tropical beaches, mountain landscapes, UNESCO World Heritage sites, exceptional food and modern cities for a fraction of what visitors can spend in destinations such as Western Europe, North America or high-end island resorts.

The important question is not simply:

Where is everything cheap?

A better question is:

Where does a tourist receive unusually good value for the money spent?

Current traveler-spending data reveals several striking possibilities.

According to country-level expenditure data compiled by Budget Your Trip from previous travelers, average daily spending can be around $22 in Laos, $35 in Bolivia, $38 in Egypt and roughly $40 in Nepal, Georgia and India. Costs increase according to accommodation, activities, season and travel style, but those figures illustrate how dramatically destinations can differ. Budget Your Trip

This guide examines 10 cheap countries for tourists where a sensible budget can still deliver a rich trip.

Cheap Countries for Tourists at a Glance

Country Approx. Average Daily Tourist Spend Particularly Good For
Laos $22 Slow travel, nature, temples
Bolivia $35 Mountains, salt flats, adventure
Egypt $38 Ancient history, archaeology
Nepal $39 Mountains, trekking, culture
Georgia $40 Food, mountains, historic towns
India $40 Culture, food, history
Indonesia $65 Islands, beaches, volcanoes
Vietnam $66 Food, cities, coastline
Colombia $67 Cities, nature, Caribbean coast
Cambodia $73 Angkor, history, Southeast Asian travel

These figures are average reported tourist expenses, not guaranteed prices. They can include accommodation, food, local transportation and sightseeing, and travelers choosing hostels, local restaurants and slower itineraries may spend considerably less.

They also do not include international airfare.

That distinction matters when comparing cheap countries for tourists.

A $25 hotel does not automatically create a $25-a-day vacation.

What Makes a Country Cheap for Tourists?

Several factors determine whether a destination offers genuine value.

Accommodation

A country with affordable guesthouses, hostels and locally owned hotels can dramatically reduce total trip cost.

Local Food

Eating where residents eat rather than relying exclusively on international restaurants can make a significant difference.

Transportation

Metro systems, buses, trains and inexpensive ride services can make exploring much more affordable than renting cars or constantly taking taxis.

Attractions

A cheap hotel does not help much if every attraction costs $80.

Destinations with affordable museums, temples, historic neighborhoods and natural attractions provide better overall value.

Exchange Rates and Inflation

A destination that was extremely cheap several years ago may no longer be.

Currency movements and inflation can transform tourism costs rapidly.

The News Ink’s guide to smart travel planning explains why travelers should calculate total daily cost rather than judging a trip from the advertised hotel price alone.

With that in mind, here are 10 cheap countries for tourists that still offer unusually strong value.

1. Laos — One of the Cheapest Countries for Tourists

Laos may be the standout destination on this list.

Traveler expenditure data currently places average spending at around $22 per person per day, including typical spending across accommodation, food, local transportation and sightseeing. Reported average meal spending is about $11 per day, while local transportation averages less than $2. Budget Your Trip

That makes Laos one of the strongest examples of cheap countries for tourists who prefer slower travel.

Why Laos Can Be So Affordable

The country has relatively inexpensive:

  • guesthouses;
  • local restaurants;
  • street food;
  • buses;
  • markets;
  • cafés;
  • temple visits.

Luang Prabang is the country’s most famous tourism center, combining Buddhist temples, colonial-era architecture and access to waterfalls and the Mekong River.

Vientiane offers a quieter capital-city experience, while places such as Vang Vieng provide dramatic limestone landscapes.

Laos is particularly suited to travelers who do not feel the need to change cities every day.

Slow travel reduces transportation expenses and allows visitors to use local accommodation rather than constantly paying for transfers and tours.

Where You Can Overspend

Private excursions, premium river cruises and imported food can quickly increase costs.

The cheapest version of Laos is built around local meals, guesthouses and independent exploration.

Best for: backpackers, slow travelers, nature lovers and travelers exploring mainland Southeast Asia.

2. Bolivia — Extraordinary Landscapes Without Extraordinary Prices

South America is not uniformly cheap.

But Bolivia remains one of its strongest value destinations.

Reported traveler spending averages roughly $35 per person per day, with accommodation expenditure around $18 per person and local transportation around $6.35. Budget Your Trip

That makes Bolivia one of the most interesting cheap countries for tourists who want adventure rather than resort travel.

What Makes Bolivia Special?

The country contains:

  • Salar de Uyuni;
  • Lake Titicaca;
  • La Paz;
  • Andean mountain landscapes;
  • colonial architecture;
  • indigenous markets;
  • high-altitude wilderness.

Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, has become Bolivia’s signature experience.

Some major excursions can cost considerably more than ordinary daily life, particularly multi-day salt-flat tours.

But food, buses and local accommodation can remain very affordable.

The Important Catch

Bolivia rewards preparation.

Distances can be substantial, road journeys long and elevations extreme.

A traveler choosing the cheapest possible itinerary without considering comfort or acclimatization may save money but create an unnecessarily difficult trip.

Affordable travel works best when price is balanced with safety and practicality.

Best for: adventure travelers, landscape photography and longer South American itineraries.

3. Egypt — World-Famous History at a Surprisingly Low Daily Cost

Egypt feels like a destination that should be extremely expensive.

It contains some of humanity’s most famous monuments.

Yet everyday tourism costs can remain surprisingly manageable.

Budget Your Trip currently puts typical traveler spending at around $38 per person per day, with approximately $17 spent on food, $6 on local transportation and $26 for accommodation per person based on shared-room assumptions. Budget Your Trip

That makes Egypt one of the most surprising cheap countries for tourists.

What Can You Experience?

Travelers can build an itinerary around:

  • Cairo;
  • the Giza pyramids;
  • Luxor;
  • Karnak;
  • the Valley of the Kings;
  • Aswan;
  • Alexandria;
  • the Red Sea.

Egypt also provides an excellent example of why historical travel does not have to require a premium budget.

The News Ink’s guide to extraordinary historical travel destinations explores how archaeological places become more meaningful when travelers understand the civilizations behind them.

The Pyramids of Giza also feature in our guide to major UNESCO heritage experiences.

What Can Make Egypt Expensive?

Major guided tours, Nile cruises and premium Red Sea resorts can raise the budget significantly.

A traveler based in ordinary hotels and using local restaurants will experience a completely different cost structure from someone booking luxury packages.

Best for: history, archaeology, ancient civilizations and winter travel.

4. Nepal — Mountains Without a Luxury Budget

Nepal combines one of the world’s most famous mountain landscapes with some surprisingly low everyday costs.

Average reported spending is around $39 per person per day, with meals averaging approximately $12 and local transport around $9. Budget Your Trip

That places Nepal firmly among the cheap countries for tourists.

Kathmandu alone can occupy several days with:

  • temples;
  • old squares;
  • markets;
  • Buddhist stupas;
  • traditional architecture;
  • inexpensive restaurants.

Pokhara offers a completely different atmosphere around Phewa Lake and acts as a gateway to the Annapurna region.

Trekking Changes the Equation

Nepal can be very cheap when visiting cities and towns.

Trekking costs are more complicated.

Permits, guides where required, equipment, transport and higher-priced food in remote areas can push daily expenses upward.

Mount Everest expeditions belong to an entirely different financial universe from ordinary tourism.

But visitors do not need to climb Everest to experience the Himalayas.

Shorter hikes and lower-altitude routes can provide extraordinary mountain scenery without expedition-level costs.

Why Nepal Offers Good Value

Accommodation and local meals remain inexpensive in many areas, while some of the country’s greatest attractions are landscapes rather than expensive entertainment venues.

Best for: trekking, mountain scenery, spirituality and cultural travel.

5. Georgia — Perhaps Europe’s Best Value Surprise

Georgia is particularly interesting because it feels different from the stereotypical ultra-cheap destination.

Tbilisi offers cafés, restaurants, nightlife, architecture and modern amenities.

Yet average traveler spending remains around $40 per day according to current traveler data. Meals average around $15, local transportation around $6 and accommodation about $24 per person. Budget Your Trip

That makes Georgia one of the strongest cheap countries for tourists seeking a combination of comfort and affordability.

Why Travelers Like Georgia

Georgia combines:

  • Tbilisi’s old town;
  • Caucasus mountain scenery;
  • monasteries;
  • Black Sea coastline;
  • traditional cuisine;
  • one of the world’s oldest winemaking traditions.

Travelers can spend several days exploring Tbilisi without requiring a large transportation budget.

From there, mountains and historic towns become accessible through buses, shared vans and tours.

Food Is Part of the Value

Khinkali dumplings and khachapuri cheese bread are internationally recognizable Georgian dishes, but local cuisine extends much further.

For travelers who judge destination value partly by how well they can eat without spending heavily, Georgia performs extremely well.

The Limitation

Luxury accommodation and some mountain resorts can be much more expensive.

As with most cheap countries for tourists, the national average hides significant local variation.

Best for: couples, food travelers, mountain trips and travelers looking for affordable European-adjacent destinations.

6. India — Almost Every Travel Budget Is Possible

Few countries offer as wide a price range as India.

A traveler can spend hundreds of dollars per night in luxury hotels—or travel remarkably cheaply using local accommodation, trains and restaurants.

Current reported traveler spending averages around $40 per person per day, including approximately $15 for meals, $5.68 for local transportation and $30 for accommodation. Budget Your Trip

India therefore remains one of the most significant cheap countries for tourists.

The Advantage Is Scale

India is not one travel experience.

A trip might include:

  • Delhi;
  • Agra;
  • Jaipur;
  • Mumbai;
  • Kerala;
  • Goa;
  • Rajasthan;
  • Varanasi;
  • Himalayan regions;
  • southern temple cities.

Those destinations can differ enormously in climate, food and cost.

Local trains and buses can make long-distance travel affordable, although comfort varies dramatically by service type.

Food Can Be Exceptional Value

Local restaurants can provide full meals for a fraction of typical restaurant prices in wealthier destinations.

India’s regional diversity also means inexpensive food does not have to become repetitive.

Why Planning Matters

India rewards travelers who research neighborhoods, transport and local conditions before arriving.

The lowest advertised option is not automatically the best one.

As our smart travel guide emphasizes, safety, location and convenience should be considered part of value.

Best for: food, culture, architecture, long trips and travelers comfortable with intense destinations.

7. Indonesia — Affordable Once You Look Beyond Luxury Bali

Indonesia demonstrates why national travel costs need context.

Average traveler spending is roughly $65 per person per day, while budget travelers in the same dataset average closer to $23 per day. Budget Your Trip

That still makes Indonesia one of the more appealing cheap countries for tourists, especially outside premium resort areas.

Indonesia Is Much More Than Bali

The country contains thousands of islands.

Popular possibilities include:

  • Java;
  • Bali;
  • Lombok;
  • Sumatra;
  • Flores;
  • the Gili Islands;
  • Komodo;
  • Yogyakarta.

Bali can be cheap, but places such as Canggu, Seminyak and premium Ubud resorts can also be expensive.

Meanwhile, local food and accommodation elsewhere in Indonesia can remain remarkably affordable.

The News Ink’s guide to 2026 spring getaways includes Raja Ampat, showing how dramatically Indonesian travel experiences can vary—from inexpensive city stays to remote marine expeditions.

The Hidden Cost: Moving Between Islands

Flights, ferries and speedboats can become major expenses.

Indonesia becomes much cheaper when travelers remain in one region rather than island-hopping constantly.

Best for: tropical travel, beaches, diving, culture and longer stays.

8. Vietnam — One of Asia’s Strongest Value Destinations

Vietnam has become enormously popular, yet it continues to offer excellent value.

Typical traveler expenditure is currently around $66 per person per day, while meals average about $21, local transportation about $11 and accommodation around $52 for a typical room, or roughly half that figure per person when shared. Budget Your Trip

Travelers willing to choose simpler hotels and local restaurants can spend significantly less.

That combination keeps Vietnam near the top of many discussions about cheap countries for tourists.

What Makes Vietnam Such Good Value?

A single trip can combine:

  • Hanoi;
  • Ho Chi Minh City;
  • Hoi An;
  • Hue;
  • Ninh Binh;
  • Ha Long Bay;
  • Da Nang;
  • mountain regions;
  • beaches.

Street food is a major advantage.

Pho, bánh mì, noodle dishes, rice plates and local coffee can be inexpensive while remaining central parts of the travel experience.

Do Not Confuse Cheap With Careless

Vietnam also illustrates why viral tourism needs research.

The News Ink has examined Hanoi Train Street and its safety restrictions, where a social-media-famous attraction exists alongside real railway risks and access controls.

Low-cost travel should still respect local regulations and safety.

Best for: food, backpacking, cities, history and multi-week trips.

9. Colombia — Strong Value in South America

Colombia is more expensive than Bolivia but can still provide impressive value compared with many major international destinations.

Average traveler spending is approximately $67 per person per day, including about $25 for meals, $10 for local transportation and $37 for accommodation. Budget Your Trip

That keeps Colombia among attractive cheap countries for tourists, particularly for visitors who stay outside the most expensive neighborhoods and travel slowly.

Where Tourists Go

Popular destinations include:

  • Bogotá;
  • Medellín;
  • Cartagena;
  • coffee-growing regions;
  • Caribbean beaches;
  • mountain towns.

Colombia’s greatest strength is variety.

Visitors can experience major cities, tropical coastline and mountain landscapes in one country.

Cartagena Can Distort the Budget

Cartagena’s historic center and popular coastal areas can be considerably more expensive than many other parts of Colombia.

Medellín has also seen accommodation costs rise in popular neighborhoods.

The lesson is important:

Cheap countries for tourists can still contain expensive tourist zones.

Traveling one neighborhood away from the obvious international-tourism center can materially reduce costs.

Best for: cities, nightlife, coffee culture, nature and South American itineraries.

10. Cambodia — Affordable Travel With One of the World’s Great Historic Sites

Cambodia completes the list.

The average traveler currently spends around $73 per person per day, with reported daily averages of approximately $26 for meals, $7.50 for local transportation and $45 for accommodation. Budget Your Trip

Budget-focused travelers can reduce those numbers substantially.

The country’s greatest attraction is obvious:

Angkor.

The enormous temple complex around Siem Reap is one of Asia’s most important archaeological landscapes.

The News Ink’s guide to destinations where history and nature collide examines Angkor Wat and the extraordinary relationship between Khmer architecture and the surrounding landscape.

Cambodia Beyond Angkor

Travelers can also explore:

  • Phnom Penh;
  • Battambang;
  • Kampot;
  • Kep;
  • southern islands;
  • rural Cambodia.

Guesthouses, local transport and traditional restaurants can remain affordable.

Where the Budget Rises

Temple passes, private drivers, island resorts and Western-style restaurants can increase spending.

For most visitors, however, Cambodia continues to deliver considerable travel value.

Best for: archaeology, Southeast Asian routes, backpacking and cultural travel.

Which Cheap Country Is Actually the Cheapest?

Using current average traveler-spending figures from the destinations in this comparison, Laos stands out at approximately $22 per person per day. Bolivia follows at around $35, while Egypt, Nepal, Georgia and India cluster at roughly $38–$40. Budget Your Trip

But the lowest number does not automatically make a destination the right choice.

A traveler from Europe may find Georgia much cheaper to reach than Laos.

Someone already traveling through Southeast Asia may find Cambodia or Vietnam more economical because overland transportation avoids expensive flights.

Another person may spend far more in a $22-a-day country because they prefer boutique hotels and private tours.

That is why cheap countries for tourists should be compared using the complete trip rather than daily expenses alone.

Cheap Country Does Not Mean Cheap Flight

International airfare can completely change the calculation.

Imagine two trips.

Destination A

Daily cost: $35
Return flight: $1,400

Destination B

Daily cost: $65
Return flight: $250

For a one-week holiday, Destination B may actually be cheaper overall.

For a three-month trip, the much lower daily cost of Destination A becomes increasingly important.

This is one reason cheap countries for tourists become particularly attractive for:

  • backpackers;
  • remote workers permitted to stay legally;
  • gap-year travelers;
  • long vacations;
  • slow travelers.

The longer the trip, the more daily living costs matter.

How to Spend Less in Cheap Countries for Tourists

Low local prices help, but traveler behavior still determines the final bill.

A few habits make an enormous difference:

  1. Travel slowly. Moving every two days increases transport costs.
  2. Eat local food. Imported or Western-style meals often cost much more.
  3. Choose neighborhoods carefully. Tourist centers commonly charge premiums.
  4. Use public transport. Private transfers can erase local cost advantages.
  5. Check the season. Accommodation prices can change dramatically.
  6. Compare the final hotel price. Taxes and fees matter.
  7. Use local currency where appropriate. Poor currency conversion can quietly increase costs.
  8. Budget for attractions separately. Famous sites can cost much more than normal daily life.
  9. Avoid treating every day as a tour day. Paid excursions quickly accumulate.
  10. Do not sacrifice safety simply to save money.

For more detailed planning, our Travel Smarter guide covers accommodation, documents, transport, travel money, insurance and avoiding unnecessary expenses.

Where Budget Travelers Commonly Overspend

A surprising amount of travel spending has little to do with the destination itself.

Constantly Changing Hotels

Moving every day increases transport expenses and makes long-stay discounts impossible.

Airport Transport

A $20-a-night hotel can feel less cheap after repeated $40 transfers.

International Restaurants

A destination may have $3 local meals but $15 imported burgers.

Alcohol

Alcohol can cost disproportionately more than food in many low-cost destinations.

Tours Booked Through Overseas Platforms

Local operators can sometimes charge less, although travelers should verify safety and reputation rather than choosing solely by price.

Peak Season

A country can remain cheap while its most popular beach town becomes expensive for two months of the year.

This is why genuine cheap countries for tourists are best approached with a complete budget.

Are Cheap Countries Safe for Tourists?

Price and safety are separate questions.

A country being inexpensive does not automatically make it dangerous.

Likewise, an expensive destination is not automatically safe.

Conditions can also differ substantially between regions of the same country.

Before booking, travelers should check current guidance covering:

  • local laws;
  • entry requirements;
  • demonstrations or unrest;
  • health conditions;
  • weather;
  • transport safety;
  • scams;
  • regional restrictions.

Official government travel advisories and destination immigration authorities should be checked close to departure because conditions and visa requirements can change.

Can You Actually Live in These Countries as a Tourist?

This requires an important clarification.

Low travel costs do not automatically give a foreign visitor the legal right to live indefinitely in another country.

Tourists are subject to:

  • visa rules;
  • maximum permitted stays;
  • passport requirements;
  • extension rules;
  • tax regulations;
  • restrictions on employment.

Some countries offer digital-nomad or long-stay visas, while others permit only relatively short tourist visits.

So when describing cheap countries for tourists as places where someone can “live cheaply,” the phrase refers to the cost of spending an extended legal visit there, not a right to establish permanent residence or work.

Always check the destination’s official immigration authority before planning a long stay.

The Real Value of Cheap Travel

The best cheap countries for tourists are not valuable merely because a hotel costs less.

They are valuable because travelers can spend more time experiencing the destination.

A lower daily budget might allow someone to:

  • stay three weeks instead of one;
  • take a cooking class;
  • visit another city;
  • eat more local food;
  • add a historical site;
  • travel more slowly;
  • spend less time worrying about every purchase.

And sometimes the least expensive experiences are the most memorable.

Walking through an old neighborhood.

Eating in a busy local market.

Watching sunset over mountains.

Taking a public ferry.

Exploring a temple.

Sitting at a street café.

Travel does not become meaningful in proportion to the amount of money spent.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cheap Countries for Tourists

What are the cheapest countries for tourists?

Among the destinations in this comparison, Laos, Bolivia, Egypt, Nepal, Georgia and India currently show some of the lowest average traveler costs, generally around $22–$40 per person per day in the cited traveler data. Budget Your Trip

Which cheap country is best for Southeast Asia?

Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia all offer strong value but different experiences. Laos is especially inexpensive, Vietnam combines food and city travel particularly well, Cambodia is strongest for Angkor and history, while Indonesia is ideal for islands and tropical scenery.

Is $50 a day enough for international travel?

In several countries on this list, $50 per person per day can support a reasonable budget travel style, especially with inexpensive accommodation and local food. It will be much more difficult in expensive cities or high-season resort areas.

Which cheap country is best in Europe?

Georgia provides exceptional value for travelers comfortable considering destinations at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Its average traveler expenditure is about $40 per person per day in the cited dataset. Budget Your Trip

Which cheap country is best for history?

Egypt, India and Cambodia stand out. Egypt provides access to ancient Egyptian monuments, India contains extraordinary architectural and religious heritage, while Cambodia has the Angkor archaeological complex.

Are cheap countries cheaper for long trips?

Often, yes. Long stays can reduce the average cost of accommodation and transportation because travelers move less frequently. However, visas and immigration rules must always be respected.

Is Bali still cheap?

Parts of Bali can still be affordable, but premium districts, villas, restaurants and tourist activities can be considerably more expensive. Indonesia’s strongest value is often found when travelers look beyond its most fashionable resort zones.

Final Thoughts: Cheap Travel Is Really About Value

The most interesting thing about cheap countries for tourists is how much experience can still be available for relatively little money.

Laos can offer a remarkably low daily travel cost.

Bolivia combines affordability with extraordinary landscapes.

Egypt places some of the world’s greatest ancient monuments within reach of budget travelers.

Nepal provides Himalayan experiences without requiring luxury-level spending.

Georgia mixes food, mountains and historic cities with unusually attractive costs.

India provides almost endless cultural variety across an enormous budget range.

Indonesia offers affordable tropical travel when visitors look beyond premium resorts.

Vietnam combines inexpensive food with some of Asia’s most interesting cities.

Colombia provides strong South American value.

And Cambodia allows travelers to experience one of humanity’s greatest archaeological landscapes while keeping ordinary daily expenses manageable.

Yet the best lesson is not simply to find the lowest number.

The smartest travelers compare airfare + accommodation + food + transportation + activities + insurance + visa costs + season.

That produces a much more realistic picture.

A destination where daily life costs $25 but flights cost $1,500 may not be cheap for a one-week vacation.

A country averaging $60 a day that is easy to reach might be the better deal.

That is why the best cheap countries for tourists are ultimately the places where the overall experience offers exceptional value—not simply the places with the lowest-priced hotel room.

Travel farther when your budget allows it.

Travel slower when it makes sense.

And remember that some of the world’s richest experiences are still found in places where travelers do not have to spend richly to enjoy them.
