A state of emergency has been declared in Wellington after intense rainfall caused widespread flooding across the region. Torrential downpours swept through parts of New Zealand’s North Island, leaving streets submerged, infrastructure damaged, and communities on high alert.

In just under an hour, the city recorded an unprecedented 77mm of rain, overwhelming drainage systems and triggering flash floods. Videos circulating online show cars partially underwater, uprooted trees, and landslides damaging homes and blocking roads.

Authorities quickly urged residents to stay indoors as weather conditions remain unstable. Forecasts indicate continued rainfall over the next 36 hours, raising concerns about further flooding. As a precaution, officials have canceled several flights at Wellington Airport and temporarily closed multiple schools.

Emergency teams have already evacuated more than a dozen residents from high-risk areas. Meanwhile, search efforts continue for a missing 60-year-old man from the Karori suburb. Despite the severity of the situation, no deaths have been confirmed so far.

This flooding event follows closely behind the recent impact of Cyclone Vaianu, which affected parts of the North Island just days earlier. The back-to-back extreme weather incidents highlight growing concerns around climate-related disruptions.

Scientific research increasingly links such intense weather events to climate change, suggesting that storms, floods, and heavy rainfall are becoming more frequent and severe worldwide.

Officials reported that the powerful floodwaters have displaced vehicles and lifted manhole covers, indicating the intensity of the flow. Residents in affected neighborhoods described dramatic scenes, with fast-moving water rushing through streets and properties.

In some areas, landslides have blocked escape routes, forcing people to find alternative ways to reach safety. Authorities have warned that the worst weather conditions may still lie ahead and have urged residents to prepare for possible evacuations.

Emergency management teams continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to stay informed, act early if evacuation becomes necessary, and prioritize safety as conditions evolve.
