Wales captain Dewi Lake described his team’s late Six Nations defeat to Scotland as “gut-wrenching.” The loss came just six minutes from time when George Turner scored the winning try, ending Wales’ hopes of ending their 13-game losing streak in Cardiff.

Wales had led from early prop Rhys Carre’s try in the ninth minute and delivered a performance that suggested a long-awaited turnaround.

“It’s gut-wrenching. We knew the performance was there,” Lake said. “We applied pressure, attacked effectively, and delivered on the plans we discussed throughout the week. But we didn’t stay in the moments for the full 80 minutes, and that’s why the scoreboard went against us.”

Despite the defeat, head coach Darren Tandy acknowledged the progress his team made. Wales led at half-time for the first time under his guidance, and even held leads of 20-5 and 23-12 during the second half, though they had to settle for a losing bonus point.

“I’m bitterly disappointed not to get the win, but I have immense pride in the group,” Tandy said. “The first half showed a lot of promise in our attack, and overall, it’s a step in the right direction. There’s plenty to build on for the next game.”

The Principality Stadium crowd of 70,649 also earned praise for its support. Tandy said, “The fans were incredible. Their energy and backing made a real difference for the players. It’s exactly the kind of atmosphere we want to create at home.”

Injury concerns now add to Wales’ challenges. Scarlets duo Taine Plumtree and Sam Costelow are set for scans after sustaining injuries during the game. Plumtree suffered a shoulder injury, while Costelow, who had played a pivotal role in the first half, faces a lower-leg problem.

“Sam was fantastic driving the team forward in the first half, and it’s such a shame that his game ended with an injury,” Tandy said.

While the defeat was disappointing, Lake and Tandy both stressed the positives from the performance, hoping the lessons learned will help Wales perform more consistently in the remainder of the tournament.
