The Richard Gadd Half Man BBC series marks his follow-up project after the global success of Baby Reindeer, where he played comedian Donny Dunn. That earlier project brought him widespread recognition and critical acclaim.

A Role That Felt Completely Different

In Half Man, Gadd both writes and stars in the series. The story follows two characters, Niall and Ruben, across three decades, exploring friendship, identity, and emotional trauma.

Gadd said the role of Ruben felt completely different from anything he had done before. He described the experience as intimidating and emotionally challenging.

Fear of Expectations

The actor revealed that he initially doubted whether he should even take on the acting role. After the intense experience of Baby Reindeer, he worried about audience expectations and personal pressure.

He admitted that failure in such a demanding role would feel overwhelming. However, he chose not to let fear stop him from taking the challenge.

Physical and Emotional Transformation

To fully embody the character, Gadd underwent a major transformation. He changed his appearance significantly, including growing a heavy beard, altering his hairstyle, and building physical strength.

He explained that this transformation was necessary to convince viewers of a completely different persona. The character required a more masculine and hardened presence compared to his previous role.
