Pakistan Eyes Long-Term Peace After US-Iran Ceasefire

Pakistan has expressed optimism that the ongoing ceasefire between the United States and Iran could evolve into a permanent peace agreement. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Islamabad remains committed to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at the 6th International Paigham-e-Islam Conference in Islamabad, Dar highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating direct communication between Washington and Tehran for the first time in nearly five decades.

According to the foreign minister, Pakistan’s diplomacy focused on two main objectives:

  • Establishing direct negotiations
  • Securing a ceasefire to stop violence

He described recent developments as an important breakthrough in regional peace efforts.

Ceasefire Extensions Bring Hope

Dar noted that the ceasefire, initially introduced for two weeks, has now been extended multiple times. He welcomed the continued reduction in violence and civilian casualties.

“First it happened, then it was extended repeatedly,” he said while addressing delegates at the conference.

The minister stressed that the halt in hostilities has already saved lives. Before the ceasefire, escalating military exchanges reportedly caused hundreds of deaths daily across the region.

Although tensions remain unresolved, the extension of the ceasefire has eased fears of a broader regional conflict.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Role Gains Attention

Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic player during the crisis. Officials in Islamabad worked behind the scenes to encourage dialogue between the two rival nations.

Dar said Pakistan actively engaged both sides from late February onward in an effort to reduce confrontation and open channels for communication.

The talks marked a historic moment because:

  • The US and Iran held direct discussions for the first time in 47 years
  • Previous diplomacy relied mainly on indirect communication through mediators such as Oman
  • Pakistan positioned itself as a neutral facilitator focused on regional stability

While the negotiations did not produce a formal peace agreement, both parties avoided a breakdown in dialogue, which diplomats consider a positive outcome.

Trump Extends Ceasefire Indefinitely

US President Donald Trump later announced that the ceasefire would continue indefinitely.

The extension came after consultations involving Pakistan’s leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The White House described the extension as an effort to create space for further diplomacy and prevent renewed military escalation.

However, despite the ceasefire, several major issues remain unresolved:

  • Economic sanctions
  • Maritime restrictions
  • Regional military tensions
  • Closure of key trade routes

Conflict Triggered Wider Regional Crisis

The crisis intensified after coordinated US and Israeli military strikes targeted Iranian facilities earlier this year.

Iran responded forcefully by:

  • Closing the Strait of Hormuz
  • Increasing military readiness across the region
  • Responding to attacks on strategic positions

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying a major share of global oil and gas exports.

Its closure disrupted international energy markets and raised concerns over:

  • Rising fuel prices
  • Supply chain instability
  • Global economic uncertainty

The United States later imposed restrictions on Iranian ports, further increasing pressure on Tehran.

Pakistan Calls for Muslim Unity

During his speech, Dar also urged Muslim countries to strengthen cooperation and unity.

He argued that collective diplomatic efforts would carry greater influence in resolving regional disputes and preventing future conflicts.

Pakistan has consistently promoted dialogue-based solutions to Middle Eastern crises. Officials believe regional stability benefits not only Muslim-majority nations but also the broader global economy.

Dar emphasized that diplomacy remains the only sustainable path forward.

Challenges Remain Despite Progress

Although the ceasefire has reduced immediate violence, the broader conflict remains fragile.

Several issues continue to complicate negotiations:

  • The Strait of Hormuz remains closed
  • Iranian ports face restrictions
  • No follow-up face-to-face talks have been confirmed
  • Mutual distrust between Washington and Tehran persists

President Trump recently suggested that future discussions could continue through telephone diplomacy rather than direct meetings.

Analysts say this approach may maintain communication channels but could slow progress toward a comprehensive settlement.

Why the Ceasefire Matters Globally

The US-Iran conflict affects far more than regional politics. The confrontation carries major consequences for:

  • Global oil markets
  • International shipping routes
  • Investor confidence
  • Energy security

Even temporary stability in the region can help calm financial markets and reduce uncertainty for importing nations.

A lasting peace agreement could also improve humanitarian conditions and reduce military spending pressures across the Middle East.

Pakistan’s Growing Diplomatic Influence

Pakistan’s mediation efforts have drawn international attention. By helping facilitate dialogue between two long-standing rivals, Islamabad has strengthened its image as a diplomatic bridge-builder.

Observers say Pakistan’s involvement reflects:

  • Its strategic regional relationships
  • Its desire to prevent wider instability
  • Its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution

The government hopes continued engagement will support long-term peace efforts while enhancing Pakistan’s international standing.

Key Highlights

  • Pakistan helped facilitate direct US-Iran talks
  • The ceasefire has been extended indefinitely
  • Officials hope temporary peace becomes permanent
  • The Strait of Hormuz remains closed
  • Economic and regional tensions continue
  • Pakistan urged Muslim unity and diplomacy

Initial Conflict Escalation US and Israeli strikes targeted Iran
Iranian Response Strait of Hormuz closed
Pakistan Mediation Direct talks facilitated
Ceasefire Introduced Initial two-week agreement
Ceasefire Extensions Multiple extensions approved
Current Status Ceasefire remains in effect indefinitely

Diplomacy Still Faces a Tough Road

Despite progress, experts warn that turning the ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement will require sustained diplomatic commitment.

Major hurdles include:

  • Deep political mistrust
  • Security concerns
  • Economic sanctions
  • Regional alliances and rivalries

Still, the continuation of dialogue offers hope that both nations may avoid another dangerous escalation.

Pakistan believes the current pause in hostilities provides a valuable opportunity for broader negotiations and confidence-building measures.

Conclusion

Pakistan has positioned itself at the center of a critical diplomatic effort aimed at easing one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical conflicts.

The extended US-Iran ceasefire has already reduced violence and opened communication channels that had remained frozen for decades.

While major challenges remain unresolved, Islamabad hopes continued diplomacy can transform the fragile truce into a permanent peace arrangement.

For now, the ceasefire stands as a rare moment of calm in a region long shaped by tension and uncertainty.
