England manager Sarina Wiegman has named 17-year-old Erica Meg Parkinson in a 23-player squad for April’s Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland.

Parkinson, a midfielder for Portuguese top-flight side Valadares Gaia, is a rising talent who has represented England at multiple youth levels, most recently the under-23s.

Wiegman, known for her strategic surprises, said she doesn’t expect Parkinson to start immediately but looks forward to seeing the youngster adjust to senior international football.

“I think for every young player joining the first team, it is a big step. It can bring anxiety, which is completely normal,” Wiegman said. “I hope she adapts quickly, enjoys herself, and shows her abilities. I like surprises!”

Parkinson’s selection comes after Manchester United’s Ella Toone and Manchester City’s Grace Clinton withdrew due to injuries, opening a spot in the squad.

Born in Singapore to an English father and Japanese mother, Parkinson could have represented three nations but chose England. She has already earned 44 youth caps, including appearances at the Under-19 European Championships last summer.

Wiegman described Parkinson as “dynamic, technical, and aggressive in attack.” While the step up from Portugal and under-23 football to the senior England squad is significant, the manager said the teenager is ready to learn and gain experience.

“She’s not expected to start immediately. This is about exposure, adaptation, and growth. She’s an exciting talent, and we want to give her that opportunity,” Wiegman added.
