JULIAN ALVAREZ has quickly become one of the most closely watched forwards in European football, and his future at Atlético Madrid may now depend heavily on his Champions League performances.

The Argentina striker arrived in Madrid after a £100 million move from Manchester City. His transfer followed strong interest from several top European clubs, but he ultimately chose Atlético after speaking directly with manager Diego Simeone.

Simeone played a key role in convincing Álvarez to join. He repeatedly contacted the player during international tournaments in 2024, along with teammates such as Rodrigo De Paul and Antoine Griezmann, to show how central he would be in Atlético’s plans.

Álvarez grew up in the small Argentine town of Calchín. His family nicknamed him “La Aranita” (The Little Spider) because of his quick movement and ability to control the ball from a young age.

His early football journey began at River Plate, where he quickly rose through the ranks. A standout moment came when he scored six goals in a single Copa Libertadores match, announcing himself on the international stage.

After joining Manchester City in 2022, Álvarez became part of a highly successful squad under manager Pep Guardiola. He won major trophies, including the Champions League, but often played a supporting role in a star-studded team.

His move to Atlético Madrid gave him a more central role in attack. Simeone promised him a system built around his strengths, with more responsibility and freedom on the pitch. That vision, combined with the presence of several Argentine teammates, helped secure his decision.

Álvarez joined Atlético in a record deal worth around €95 million (£81.5m), marking one of the club’s biggest-ever signings. Despite the pressure of the transfer fee, he has downplayed expectations, insisting he feels like just another player in the squad.

On the pitch, Álvarez has shown strong overall performance. He has scored consistently across competitions, although his league form has fluctuated. In La Liga, he endured a long goal drought before recently returning to the scoresheet.

However, his Champions League form has stood out. He has scored nine goals in 12 appearances this season, highlighting his importance in European competition.

With Atlético relying heavily on his performances at the highest level, his impact in the Champions League could ultimately shape how the club views his long-term future.
