LIONEL MESSI has officially become the new owner of Spanish club UE Cornellà, marking a significant move into football ownership while continuing his playing career in the United States.

The fifth-tier Catalan club announced that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has completed the acquisition, describing the deal as a step that strengthens his connection to the region where he spent much of his professional career.

Messi, currently playing for Inter Miami CF, built his legacy at FC Barcelona, where he scored a record 672 goals in 778 appearances and won numerous domestic and European titles.

Cornellà said the move reflects Messi’s commitment to developing football talent and supporting the growth of the sport at grassroots level in Catalonia.

The club also highlighted its long-term vision, focusing on sustainability, sporting development, and stronger ties with the local community.

UE Cornellà operates from a small stadium with a capacity of around 1,500 spectators but has a strong reputation for youth development. Several notable players, including Jordi Alba and David Raya, began their careers at the club.

Messi’s move follows a growing trend of former and active football stars investing in club ownership. His long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo also recently acquired a stake in Spanish side Almería.

The takeover represents another step in Messi’s evolving relationship with Catalan football, where he spent most of his career before leaving Barcelona in 2021.

Club officials said the partnership will focus on strengthening sporting structures, developing young players, and building a stronger institutional foundation for the future.

As Messi continues his playing career in Major League Soccer, his ownership role signals a growing interest in shaping the next generation of football talent off the pitch.
