Gennaro Gattuso Leaves Italy Role Following World Cup Exit

Gennaro Gattuso and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have mutually agreed to terminate his contract. This decision follows Italy’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup after a heartbreaking 4-1 penalty shootout loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Gattuso, a former Italian international with 73 caps, took charge in June as Luciano Spalletti’s successor. Although he won six of his eight matches as manager, the team missed its primary goal of tournament qualification.

“I consider my time as coach of the national team to be over,” Gattuso stated following the defeat. “It has been an honor to lead the national team.”

A Period of Major Change

The resignation follows significant departures within Italian football leadership. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina resigned on Thursday, and legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon stepped down from his role as the national team’s delegation head.

Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, last appeared in the tournament in 2014. This latest exit marks a historic low, as no previous winner has missed three consecutive World Cups.

Potential Successors for the Azzurri

The Italian federation now faces the challenge of rebuilding. Several high-profile managers appear on the list of potential candidates:

• Massimiliano Allegri: Fans frequently cite the current AC Milan manager as the top choice due to his extensive Serie A success with Milan and Juventus.

• Roberto Mancini: The former Italy boss led the team to Euro 2020 glory. He currently manages Qatari side Al-Sadd.

• Antonio Conte: Despite his contract with Napoli until 2027, the former national coach remains a prominent figure linked to the vacancy.

• Fabio Cannavaro: The 2006 World Cup-winning captain currently manages Uzbekistan but represents a legendary option to restore Italian pride.

• Stefano Pioli: The former AC Milan manager is currently available and holds experience leading multiple top-tier Italian clubs.
