The 2026 Academy Awards bring excitement, record-breaking achievements, and interesting stories from this year’s nominees. From box office giants to historic nominations, the awards season has produced several notable moments.

Here are some of the most interesting facts ahead of this year’s ceremony.

1. A Unique Inspiration Behind Sinners

Ryan Coogler, director of the film Sinners, once shared a childhood habit that reflects his creative style.

As a child, he often mixed different drinks at cinema soda machines. Years later, his filmmaking shows a similar style. His movie blends blues music, vampire horror, and 1930s Mississippi culture into one story.

The film is nominated for Best Picture and may win multiple awards.

However, it faces strong competition from another major contender, One Battle After Another.

2. Zootopia 2 Leads the Box Office Among Nominees

Zootopia 2 is the highest-grossing film among this year’s nominees. The animated sequel has earned $1.86 billion worldwide.

Interestingly, the movie uses a different title in Europe. There it is called Zootropolis 2.

The name change happened because a Danish zoo registered the “Zootopia” trademark in the European Union before the original film was released.

Another big box office success this year is Avatar: Fire & Ash, which has earned $1.48 billion globally.

Among Best Picture nominees, the highest earner is F1, with $632 million at the box office.

3. Emma Stone Sets Two Oscar Records

Emma Stone has reached a major milestone this year.

At 37 years old, she became the youngest actress ever to receive seven Oscar nominations. She surpassed the previous record held by Meryl Streep, who reached that mark at 38.

Stone also achieved another rare record. Her first five Oscar nominations came from films that were also nominated for Best Picture.

Those films include:

  • Birdman

  • The Favourite

  • Bugonia

  • La La Land

  • Poor Things

She won Best Actress for La La Land and Poor Things.

4. A Film Adaptation Over 200 Years in the Making

Mary Shelley published the novel Frankenstein in 1818.

More than two centuries later, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro released a new film adaptation for Netflix in 2025.

That creates a 207-year gap between the original book and the film adaptation.

Some adaptations have even longer gaps, including:

  • Tom Jones, based on the 1749 novel

  • Hamlet, adapted from the 1601 play

  • O Brother, Where Art Thou?, inspired by the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey

5. A Star Named After Famous Movie Characters

Rising actor Chase Infiniti has a name inspired by movie history.

She was named after Chase Meridian, a character played by Nicole Kidman in the film Batman Forever.

Her middle name comes from the famous catchphrase of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story:
“To infinity and beyond.”

Today, the 25-year-old actress is gaining recognition for her role in One Battle After Another, one of the top contenders this awards season.
