England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed remains focused on the team rather than his selection for the T20 World Cup semi-finals, even after his pivotal performance against New Zealand.

The 21-year-old made a striking World Cup debut in Colombo, taking a wicket with his very first ball and scoring an unbeaten 19 to help England chase down the target alongside Will Jacks.

Ahmed, included in the XI for the turning pitch conditions, admitted that the semi-final in Mumbai is likely to offer less assistance for his spin bowling.

“I’m not too bothered about my place in the team,” said Ahmed, who became England’s youngest men’s Test cricketer in 2022.

“Baz [coach Brendon McCullum] and Brooky [captain Harry Brook] will put out the best team to win, as they did against New Zealand. It’s not a personal thing for me – it’s my first World Cup. I’ll just enjoy the ride. If I get the nod, I’ll play; if not, I’ll give water to the boys.”

Ahmed’s calm approach underlines his team-first mindset as England aim to progress to the later stages of the tournament.
