Italian Toddler Dies After Receiving Heart Damaged During Transport

A two-year-old boy in Italy has died after receiving a donor heart that was allegedly damaged during transportation. The case has sparked nationwide outrage and prompted a criminal investigation into possible medical negligence.

Domenico passed away shortly before 9:30am local time on Saturday at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. Hospital officials stated that he suffered a sudden and irreversible deterioration in his condition.

According to the family’s lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, the donor heart had been transported over 800 kilometers from Bolzano to Naples in direct contact with dry ice. The organ was reportedly placed in an unsuitable container without proper temperature monitoring equipment, which allegedly caused severe frostbite damage to the tissue.

Petruzzi claimed the heart arrived “burned by frostbite,” raising serious concerns about the handling and preservation of the organ. Six medical professionals are now under formal investigation as prosecutors work to determine what went wrong.

Domenico had been on life support for nearly two months following the transplant in late December. Earlier this week, a panel of pediatric specialists concluded that his condition was not compatible with a second transplant. Doctors had warned that prolonged life support might have compromised his lungs, liver, and kidneys.

His mother, Patrizia Mercolino, had previously appealed publicly for help, even reaching out to the Pope in hopes of saving her son. Following his death, she said, “It’s over. Domenico is gone.”

The family has announced plans to establish a foundation in Domenico’s name. According to their lawyer, the foundation will support children unable to access transplants and assist victims of medical malpractice and negligence.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences, saying the country mourns “little Domenico, a warrior who will never be forgotten.” She added that authorities must fully clarify what happened.

Health Minister Orazio Schillaci also emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the incident must be thoroughly investigated for the sake of the child, his family, and public trust in the national healthcare system.

As the investigation continues, the case has raised urgent questions about organ transport procedures and medical accountability in Italy.
