The National Basketball Association has taken a major step toward expansion by exploring the addition of two new teams. Seattle and Las Vegas have emerged as the leading candidates.

If approved, the move would increase the number of teams from 30 to 32.

Seattle’s Potential NBA Return

Seattle has a strong basketball history. The Seattle SuperSonics played in the league from 1967 until 2008. The franchise later moved to Oklahoma City and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The team won an NBA title in 1979, and the city remains a passionate basketball market. Reports suggest that a new franchise could revive the SuperSonics name and identity.

Seattle already supports major teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Kraken, which highlights its strong sports culture.

Las Vegas Continues Its Sports Growth

Las Vegas has rapidly developed into a major sports destination. The city already hosts teams such as the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Raiders.

In addition, the Las Vegas Aces compete in professional basketball, and the Oakland Athletics plan to move there in 2028.

Las Vegas also hosts major basketball events, including NBA Summer League and All-Star activities, making it a strong candidate for expansion.

What Happens Next?

The expansion process remains in the early stages. At least 23 of the 30 team owners must approve the decision for it to move forward.

Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the league is actively evaluating both markets and engaging with potential ownership groups.

Franchise bids could range between $7 billion and $10 billion, reflecting the high value of entering the league.

Conference Changes Possible

If the NBA adds both teams, they will likely join the Western Conference. To maintain balance, one existing team—such as the Memphis Grizzlies or Minnesota Timberwolves—could move to the Eastern Conference.

Conclusion

The NBA’s expansion plans could reshape the league’s future. Seattle offers a chance to revive a historic franchise, while Las Vegas continues its rise as a major sports hub. Final approval may take time, but both cities stand ready to join the league.
