LUKE DONALD will captain Europe for the third consecutive Ryder Cup. The 2026 edition takes place at Adare Manor in Ireland.
Donald now aims to become the first captain to win three Ryder Cups in a row.
He led Europe to a 16½-11½ victory in Rome in 2023. He then guided the team to a dramatic 15-13 win in New York in 2025. That triumph marked Europe’s first away win on American soil since 2012.
The 2026 Ryder Cup will take place at Adare Manor in County Limerick from 17-19 September.
Donald said he only decided a few weeks ago. He admitted the quick turnaround between Rome and New York left little time to reflect. After winning in New York, he stepped back to enjoy the moment with his family.
He later felt motivated by the chance to lead Europe again. The event will also mark the 100th anniversary of the Ryder Cup. That milestone convinced him to accept a third term.
Donald becomes the first European captain since Bernard Gallacher (1991-1995) to serve three consecutive terms.
The USA has not yet named its captain. Reports suggest Tiger Woods is considering the role.
Donald, a former world number one, first took charge in 2023. Europe appointed him after Henrik Stenson stepped aside due to his involvement with LIV Golf.
Under Donald, Europe built a strong team culture. English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick praised his leadership. Fitzpatrick said Donald created the best team environment and unity.
Jon Rahm’s Participation Uncertain
The availability of Jon Rahm remains unclear.
Rahm currently faces issues with the DP World Tour over his involvement with LIV Golf. Eight players recently reached agreements that allow them to compete in both tours and remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection.
Rahm has not signed a similar settlement. He recently criticized the DP World Tour’s penalties and conditions.
Donald said he has not yet spoken with Rahm. He hopes the Spanish star becomes available. However, he noted that there is still more than a year before the 2026 tournament.
Europe will now prepare for another historic Ryder Cup campaign under Donald’s leadership.
