Messi Honoured with Stadium Stand at Inter Miami

Lionel Messi will have a stand named after him at Inter Miami’s new Nu Stadium. The 38-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of football’s all-time greats, joined the MLS side in 2023 after successful spells with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The club is recognising Messi while he is still active, an unusual move in football. Messi currently holds Inter Miami records with 82 goals and 53 assists, highlighting his massive impact in a short time.

A Tribute for the Present

Inter Miami commented on the honour: “Traditionally, tributes look to the past. They are built from nostalgia. From memory. This one is different. It is born from the present. From what you feel every time Leo steps on the pitch. Recognising someone is not always about closing a chapter. Sometimes it is about witnessing something unique.”

The club will host their first match at the new 26,700-capacity stadium against Austin FC on Saturday, 4 April.

Messi’s Legacy in the MLS

This is the second stadium stand named after Messi, following Newell’s Old Boys, where he played as a child, which honoured him in June 2025.

Last season, Messi became the first MLS player to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards. His arrival at the David Beckham co-owned club has raised both the league’s profile and Inter Miami’s stature, helping the team secure the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and MLS Cup.

A Record-Breaking Career in Florida

Messi’s presence in Miami has not only delivered trophies but also inspired fans and teammates. Naming a stadium stand after him while he is still playing recognises his extraordinary contribution to football and celebrates a once-in-a-generation talent in real time.
