Research shows fatherhood can physically and emotionally change the male brain

The idea that fatherhood rewires the male brain is gaining strong scientific support, showing that becoming a father can change both biology and behaviour in powerful ways.

Before the birth of his son, the author prepared for parenthood by attending workshops, reading books, and learning about pregnancy and childcare. Much of the focus, however, was on how motherhood changes the female body—hormones shift, organs adjust, and the brain adapts.

What he did not expect was that similar changes also occur in fathers.

Discovering the Science of Fatherhood

The idea came into focus after reading Father Time by primatologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy. In her work, she argues that men possess biological systems capable of deep nurturing and protection, similar to mothers.

This challenged the belief that active fathering is purely cultural. Instead, it suggests that caregiving instincts in men are biologically rooted but often underused.

The more involved a father becomes in childcare, the stronger these changes appear to be.

Hormones and Brain Changes

Early research on animals showed that male mammals often experience hormonal shifts when they become caregivers. These include changes in testosterone, prolactin, and vasopressin—hormones linked to bonding and parental behaviour.

Similar patterns have now been observed in human fathers, suggesting a biological foundation for caregiving in men.

Human Research on Fatherhood

Interest in this field grew when researcher Lee Gettler began studying hormonal changes in human fathers. As director of the Hormones, Health, and Human Behavior Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, he explores how fatherhood affects the male body.

His research highlights that fathers who actively engage in childcare often experience measurable biological changes.
