Last week delivered a disappointing start for English clubs in the Champions League knockout stage. Six Premier League teams played in the round of 16 first legs, but none managed to secure a win.

Newcastle United and Arsenal earned draws against Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Liverpool lost narrowly to Galatasaray.

The situation looks even tougher for Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City. Each team suffered heavy defeats by three goals and now faces a massive challenge in the second leg.

Spurs must overcome Atlético Madrid, Chelsea face Paris Saint-Germain, and City take on Real Madrid.

Although the odds seem overwhelming, history proves that dramatic turnarounds are possible.

Before this season, teams trailed by three or more goals in 51 Champions League knockout ties. Only four managed to qualify for the next round. These rare moments show that comebacks demand belief, precision, and courage.

Here are some of the most unforgettable Champions League comebacks.

Tottenham vs Ajax (2019 Semi-final)

Tottenham Hotspur entered the second leg against Ajax already trailing. The situation worsened quickly as Ajax built a 3-0 aggregate lead before halftime.

Spurs needed a miracle—and they delivered.

Lucas Moura stepped up and scored a stunning hat-trick, including a dramatic last-minute winner. His performance sent Tottenham to their first-ever Champions League final on away goals.

Liverpool vs Barcelona (2019 Semi-final)

Just one day earlier, Liverpool produced another iconic comeback against Barcelona.

After losing 3-0 in the first leg, Liverpool faced a near-impossible task—especially without key players. However, Divock Origi opened the scoring early, and Georginio Wijnaldum struck twice in quick succession.

A clever corner taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold caught Barcelona off guard, allowing Origi to score the decisive goal. Liverpool completed a stunning 4-0 win and advanced to the final.

Roma vs Barcelona (2018 Quarter-final)

AS Roma shocked the football world with a brilliant comeback against Barcelona.

After losing 4-1 in the first leg, Roma needed a flawless performance at home. Edin Džeko scored early to ignite belief.

Daniele De Rossi added another goal, and Kostas Manolas sealed the comeback with a powerful header. Roma advanced on away goals in one of the competition’s most emotional nights.

Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain (2017 Round of 16)

This comeback, widely known as “La Remontada,” remains one of the greatest moments in football history.

Barcelona lost 4-0 in the first leg to Paris Saint-Germain.

In the return leg, Barcelona started aggressively. Luis Suárez scored early, and the team kept pushing forward.

Despite a goal from Edinson Cavani, Barcelona needed three late goals. Neymar delivered a free-kick and a penalty before setting up Sergi Roberto for the dramatic winner in stoppage time.

Barcelona completed an unbelievable 6-1 victory, becoming the only team to overturn a four-goal deficit in the competition.

Conclusion

These legendary matches prove one thing: no deficit is impossible in the Champions League.

Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur still have a chance to rewrite their stories.

They must play with confidence, take risks, and seize every opportunity. If history repeats itself, fans could witness another unforgettable comeback.
