BEN DUCKETT has decided to withdraw from the Indian Premier League to focus on rebuilding his form and securing his place in the England cricket team.
The 31-year-old batter was set to join Delhi Capitals after being signed for £159,000 in last year’s auction. However, he has chosen to stay in England and play for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club during the early County Championship matches.
Focus on Form and Fitness
Duckett struggled for consistency in recent months. He managed only one half-century across 16 innings during the winter season. His performance in the The Ashes also fell short, with 202 runs in 10 innings at an average just above 20.
He believes returning to domestic red-ball cricket will help him regain rhythm and confidence ahead of a crucial international summer.
Duckett said the decision was difficult but necessary to refresh both mentally and physically. He aims to rediscover the form he showed earlier in his career.
Long-Term England Ambitions
The left-hander remains determined to represent England across all formats. He wants to play a key role in the team for years to come and sees this move as an important step toward that goal.
He described the decision as something that could prove to be a turning point in his career.
Off-Field Setback and Motivation
Duckett also addressed past off-field issues during the Ashes tour, including an incident in Noosa. He admitted his actions were unprofessional and accepted responsibility.
Missing out on game time during the subsequent T20 World Cup added to his frustration. However, he now uses that experience as motivation to improve and return stronger.
Potential IPL Consequences
By withdrawing at short notice, Duckett may face a suspension from future IPL seasons under league rules. This could keep him out of the tournament for up to two years and result in financial loss.
Despite this, he has prioritized his international ambitions over franchise commitments.
Boost for Nottinghamshire
Duckett’s decision benefits Nottinghamshire, who gain an experienced player for the start of the domestic season. The club has expressed full support and looks forward to his contribution on the field.
