APPLE INC has entered a new leadership phase by appointing John Ternus as its new chief executive officer. He will replace Tim Cook, who is stepping down after leading the company for 15 years.
Ternus currently heads hardware engineering and has spent 25 years at Apple. He will officially assume the CEO role on 1 September, while Cook will transition to the position of executive chairman.
Cook took over Apple in 2011 after co-founder Steve Jobs resigned due to health reasons. During his tenure, Cook transformed Apple into one of the most valuable companies in the world.
He will remain CEO through the summer to ensure a smooth transition. After that, he will continue supporting Apple by engaging with global policymakers and assisting in key strategic areas.
A Legacy of Growth and Stability
Tim Cook described his time as CEO as “the greatest privilege” of his life. Under his leadership, Apple achieved remarkable financial milestones. In 2018, the company became the first publicly traded firm to reach a $1 trillion valuation. Today, its market value stands at around $4 trillion.
Cook praised Ternus as a visionary leader. He highlighted Ternus’s engineering expertise, innovative mindset, and strong leadership values. According to Cook, Ternus is the ideal person to guide Apple into the future.
Why John Ternus Was Chosen
Ternus became a leading candidate for the CEO role after the departure of chief operating officer Jeff Williams last year. Over his long career at Apple, he has contributed to nearly every major product launch.
He played a key role in developing multiple generations of the iPad and iPhone. He also contributed to the launch of AirPods and the Apple Watch. In addition, he led Apple’s transition from Intel processors to its own custom silicon in Mac computers.
Ternus has described Cook as his mentor and expressed confidence about Apple’s future. He shared his optimism about the company’s ability to achieve new milestones in the coming years.
A Shift Toward Product Innovation
Apple’s decision to appoint a CEO with a strong hardware background signals a potential shift in strategy. While Cook delivered consistent financial growth, critics often argued that Apple lacked groundbreaking innovation during his tenure.
Industry analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee acknowledged Cook’s success in building financial strength. However, he pointed out that Apple has not introduced a revolutionary product like the iPhone in recent years.
With Ternus at the helm, expectations are rising. Many believe his product-focused leadership could drive the next wave of innovation and help Apple redefine its future.
