Starmer Mandelson vetting row deepens over security claims

Government says PM was unaware

The Starmer Mandelson vetting controversy has intensified after the government confirmed that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was unaware of security concerns. According to officials, he only learned earlier this week that Lord Mandelson had failed initial vetting for the role of UK ambassador to the United States. Meanwhile, the decision to proceed with the appointment was reportedly made within the Foreign Office.

Vetting decision overruled by officials

The Starmer Mandelson vetting issue centers on claims that security clearance was initially denied. However, officials later overruled the recommendation to allow Mandelson to take up the position. In addition, the appointment was announced in December 2024 before full vetting had been completed. As a result, questions have been raised about the process followed by government departments.

Pressure mounts over Parliament statements

The controversy has increased pressure on the prime minister following earlier statements made in Parliament. During questioning, Starmer stated multiple times that “full due process” had been followed. However, recent reports suggest that the vetting process did not fully support that claim. Therefore, critics argue that Parliament may have been misled.

Opposition leaders demand accountability

Opposition parties have responded strongly to the Starmer Mandelson vetting developments. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called for the prime minister to resign, arguing that misleading Parliament is a serious breach. In addition, other political groups, including the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK, have echoed similar concerns. Meanwhile, smaller parties have also criticized the handling of the appointment.

Calls for formal investigation

The situation has prompted calls for an official inquiry into the matter. The Scottish National Party has requested an investigation into whether the prime minister knowingly provided inaccurate information. Moreover, the issue has been referred to the independent adviser on ministerial standards. As a result, the case may undergo further scrutiny in the coming weeks.

Background of appointment controversy

Lord Mandelson’s appointment has already faced criticism due to past controversies. He was previously removed from his ambassadorial role following links to convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, despite these concerns, he formally took up the US ambassador position in February 2025. Therefore, the latest revelations have reignited debate over the judgement behind the decision.

Political fallout continues

The Starmer Mandelson vetting issue continues to develop as political pressure grows. Meanwhile, the government maintains that the prime minister acted without full knowledge of the situation. As a result, the controversy is likely to remain a major political issue, with further developments expected as investigations and responses continue.
