Péter Magyar, the politician who ended Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power, has urged a rapid transfer of authority following his party’s landslide election win in Hungary.

During talks with President Tamás Sulyok at the presidential palace, Magyar called for the first sitting of the new National Assembly to take place on 4 May, the same day official election results are expected.

President Sulyok later wrote on social media that he would convene parliament “at the earliest possible date after the final result is announced.” However, he did not directly respond to Magyar’s demand that he step down. Magyar claimed the president indicated he would consider the request.

Sulyok confirmed that he would formally nominate Magyar for the role of prime minister at the first parliamentary session, where lawmakers will vote on the new government. Magyar said this could take place on 6 or 7 May, although he prefers an earlier date.

Magyar has also criticised the president, saying he is “unworthy of representing the unity of the Hungarian nation” and “not fit to serve as a moral authority or a role model.” He has called for Sulyok to leave office once the new government is formed.

The meeting at the presidential palace began shortly before 10:00 local time. Leaders of other parliamentary parties also met the president, while outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán avoided reporters and entered the building through a side entrance.
