Chelsea Review Pre-Match Huddle After Referee Incident

Chelsea F.C. head coach Liam Rosenior says the team may change where they conduct their pre-match huddle following an unusual moment before their recent Premier League game against Newcastle United F.C..

The incident occurred just before kick-off when referee Paul Tierney stood over the ball while Chelsea players gathered in the centre circle for a team talk led by captain Reece James. Newcastle eventually won the match 1-0.

Officials had reportedly warned Chelsea not to gather around the ball before the match begins. Such positioning could increase the risk of confrontation because the opposing team needs access to the ball for kick-off.

Decision Expected Before PSG Match

Chelsea have not yet confirmed where they will hold their pre-match huddle for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint‑Germain F.C.. However, the team is expected to move the gathering away from the centre circle.

Rosenior said the situation has received too much attention.

“The players simply want to show unity and togetherness,” he explained. “We do not want to create unnecessary noise around the team, so we will decide the best place to do the huddle.”

Manager Plans Talks with Officials

After the Newcastle match, Rosenior criticised some refereeing decisions and suggested the referee should focus on managing the game. He also mentioned plans to speak with the governing body for match officials, Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

The Chelsea manager confirmed he has not yet held that discussion but expects to meet officials later this week.

He clarified that his comments were not mainly about the huddle itself but about certain decisions during the match.

Reece James Introduced the Team Huddle

Rosenior revealed that the pre-match huddle was originally introduced by captain Reece James rather than the coaching staff.

The gathering allows the captain to deliver a final message and boost team spirit before the game begins.

“That moment helps me communicate quickly with the players,” Rosenior said.

Chelsea Face Tough Challenge Against PSG

Chelsea must overturn a heavy deficit in the Champions League last-16 tie. The London side lost the first leg 5-2 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

PSG manager Luis Enrique said he found the situation surprising but does not view it as a major issue.

“If there is respect between both teams and staff, there should be no problem,” he said.

Former Official Reacts to the Scene

Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann said the incident looked unusual.

He explained that referees often control the ball at the halfway line when the opposing team is about to kick off. This approach helps avoid potential disputes or crowding around the centre spot.
